World of search is evolving fast, and as always, we’ve put together a roundup of the most important updates you shouldn’t miss.
Google updates
YouTube experiments with AI Overviews in search results - YouTube starts testing a new AI Overviews carousel that highlights the most useful video clips based on the user’s search query. Think of it as YouTube’s version of Google’s AI Overviews - giving users quicker, more relevant answers. This test is currently limited to a small number of YouTube Premium members in the US.
Google AI Overviews reach 1.5 billion monthly users - Google's AI Overviews now reach over 1.5 billion users each month, and Google plans to expand them to even more countries and query types soon. Despite concerns about AI disrupting traditional search, Google’s Search revenue still grew 10% YoY, showing the integration is working - and likely here to stay. While AI helps summarize content faster, studies (like this one from Ahrefs) show it reduces organic clicks by 34.5%, especially for informational keywords.

Ads coming to ChatGPT? OpenAI may start showing ads to free ChatGPT users as early as 2026. While the company once claimed it had “no active plans” to pursue advertising, the revenue potential appears to be shifting that stance.
ChatGPT is getting better for shopping - OpenAI has added a new shopping feature that serves product recommendations directly in chat results. According to the company, “product results are chosen independently and are not ads,” and any website or merchant can appear there. This is another step toward turning AI chat into a powerful e-commerce assistant.
